Itinerary

Day 1 | Lake Bohinj - Komna Hut - Lake Krn Hut

Starting above Lake Bohinj from the parking lot at the Savica Waterfall, we continue in the direction of Komna. Notorious for its 48 serpentines that ascend slowly through a forest, the trail opens to beautiful views of Lake Bohinj here and there, yet once we hit the tree line, the views turn spectacular, showing a whole amphitheater of peaks and Lake Bohinj below. Please note that it's about 2.5 hours to the Komna Hut for adults, which should make a 3-hour walk up for young families.

After lunch at the Komna Hut, we head towards Lake Krn along a gorgeous path. Alpine scenery, scenic vistas and a nice family-friendly easy trail. Please note that it's about 3 hours from the Komna Hut to Lake Krn for adults, which should make a 4.5-hour walk up for young families.  Once at Lake Krn, the largest high Alpine lake in Slovenia, we can spend the rest of the day by the lake, eat at the Lake Krn Hut, or hike to the scenic peaks nearby.

Elevation gain for the first day is around 1,167 m (867 m to Komna, 300 m to Lake Krn).

Day 2 | Lake Krn Hut - Krn - Soča Valley

After spending the night at the Lake Krn Hut, we head towards Mt. Krn, 2,244 m, the highest mountain of the Krn Mountains in the southwestern Julian Alps with stunning views of all Julian Alps. The ascent usually takes between 2.5-3 hours and we make about 850 m elevation gain on an easy trail.

After enjoying ourselves at the top for a while, taking pictures and congratulating ourselves for almost completing our big venture, we go for good mountain lunch just a few meters down the peak to a hut and afterwards descend down to the Soča Valley.

Day 3 | Soča Valley - Lake Bohinj

On the third day we explore the beautiful Soča Valley, its famous emerald green river, its gorges and waterfalls. We return back to Lake Bohinj in late afternoon.
