Bovški Gamsovec Climb

2-Day Tour, start from Vrata Valley / Zadnjica (pick-up in Kranjska Gora / Bled or Trenta / Bovec)

Rising majestically to 2,392 meters, Bovški Gamsovec is one of Slovenia’s most striking peaks, offering the perfect blend of alpine adventure, climbing, wildlife encounters, and awe-inspiring scenery. This fairytale ascent reveals panoramic vistas of Slovenia’s highest mountain, Mt. Triglav, with its towering 3-kilometer-wide and 1-kilometer-tall North Face dominating the horizon. The trails are framed by fields of fragrant wildflowers, while the air is filled with the occasional rustle of marmots and deer peering curiously from the shrubs. Alpine ibexes are frequent companions along the way, often seen basking in the sun on rocky outcrops, their sharp whistles breaking the tranquil silence. This journey is a haven for adventurous romantics and photographers alike, offering an unforgettable immersion in Slovenia’s rugged beauty.

Itinerary

The tour is possible from either the Upper Sava Valley (Kranjska Gora / Bled) or the Soča Valley (Trenta / Bovec).

DAY 1: Vrata Valley / Zadnjica - Hut under Bovški Gamsovec - Križ

We drive to the Vrata Valley, a spectacular Alpine valley underneath the Triglav North Face, and head towards the mountains on the opposite side of the valley. We'll be looking at the massive Triglav North Face practically the whole day together with Triglav, the highest peak of Slovenia, and the highest mountain hut at Kredarica. In parts the trail is unforgivingly steep and exposed, but generally safe as it's nicely secured with a cable. At first, the trail takes us through a forest, then climbs open gravel slopes and finally a rocky wall until we reach the top. There, the welcoming grass offers a perfect spot for a picnic with mind-blowing views of Triglav, Križ Lakes, and other craggy mountains of the Julian Alps.

Today we settle in a hut nested between high peaks. It's a cute smallish hut at 2,050 m, located by three mountain lakes, also known for herds of Alpine ibexes and chamois wandering freely nearby. If the weather allows, we climb an extra peak of Mt. Križ or hike to see all Križ lakes in the afternoon.

DAY 2: Hut - Bovški Gamsovec - Vrata Valley / Zadnjica

In the morning we head towards the peak of Bovški Gamsovec, put on the safety gear and climb all the way to the scenic top with 360 views of the mountains. The return takes us down the greener southern slopes, speckled with countless wild flowers, while it's also not unusual to meet Alpine ibexes. We refresh ourselves in the Triglavska Bistrica, a crystal clear stream that sources underneath Mt. Triglav. We can finish the tour in the nearby Aljaž Hut and cheer to a great adventure with an ice cold drink!

On the first day we climb 1,200 m to reach the hut (4 h), go see the three Križ Lakes (2-3 h) / climb mt. Križ (2.5-3 h), and spend the night in the hut. On the second day we climb the peak of Bovški Gamsovec (1.5 h), 2,392 m, and then descend back down to the valley (4.5 h).
