IN Sunset , Winter

As soon as my husband and I finished work for the week, we quickly hurried towards Gorenjska and left our car in the parking below the Matizovec farm at the foothill of the Košuta massif. In fact, Košuta is the largest massif in Slovenia with its 10 km (6.2 mi) long crest and as many as 12 mountains over 2 K. The goal for the evening was to hike to Kofce, a mountain hut at 1.488 m (4,882 ft), and record a time-lapse video of the sunset in the mountains.

Soon after a fast start on the freshly plowed road, the trail gradually lost its shape in the large amount of pristine snow. There were no footprints yet. Thankfully, we both knew the trail well and when a quick test of the stability of the snow showed it was safe, we decided to give it a go.
Trying to progress in a knee-deep powder snow is a pure pandemonium. We zig-zagged our way up searching for the easier trail, where the wind had already blown some of the snow away. Still, the first part of the ascent was quite strenuous and required full concentration not to step in 1+ meter deep snow drifts (at least not too often). Other than that, it was fun. A heart-pounding adventure! Heck, it’s not every day that you get an opportunity to plow your way through a thick powder snow.
After an hour of wading through snow, the last part with the upper crust frozen felt heavenly. We paced up and reached Kofce right on time. The last sunrays of the day danced over the cloudy skies, creating a view worth every step. The tranquility of the moment, the ultimate privacy, just me, my husband and the mountains slowly sinking into the dark. Nirvana.
